Shooters Island, Ships Graveyard, Newark Bay, Staten Island (subdivision), Richmond County, NY

Significance: Shooters Island was one of five major ship graveyards in the Greater New York Harbor. From the mid-nineteenth century through 1922, the island was used for small scale industrial and shipbuilding operations. Abandoned vessels began to accumulate there by 1930. Most vessels there today are scows and barges, present in large numbers since the 1950s. Shooters Island has become increasingly significant to maritime history and technology, as other collections of vessels have disappeared.
