Prince Alfred Ernest Albert, Duke of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha, Prince of Great Britain and Ireland, Duke of Edinburgh, &c., died Tuesday, July 31. Humbert the First, King of Italy, assassinated at Monza, Sunday, July 29.

Tenniel's cartoon was published in Punch shortly after the deaths of King Humbert the First of Italy and Queen Victoria's fourth-born child, Prince Alfred Ernest Albert. King Humbert's assassination by an Italian anarchist, deeply shocked the world, as did the death of Prince Alfred who died of heart failure.
