St. Elmo Mercantile Company, North side of East Main Street, Saint Elmo (historical), Chaffee County, CO
Summary
Significance: One of the two major general stores that served St. Elmo during its final boom from c. 1908 to 1917. Architecturally shows the retention of overall design and details of earlier decades. The bracketed cornice recalls the Italianate commercial buildings of 1870's mining camps. Few other "false-fronted" buildings in St. Elmo were give such ornamental brackets.
