West Brooklyn Green, Tatnic Road & Hartford Road, Brooklyn, Windham County, CT

description

Summary

Significance: The village of West Brooklyn in Brooklyn, Connecticut developed in the early to mid-nineteenth century as a small cluster of residential and commercial development, centered around West Brooklyn Green. The growth of the village is associated with a general period of economic development and expansion that occurred in Brooklyn during the first half of the 1800s. Three of the four extant houses around the West Brooklyn Green exemplify the Greek Revival style that was popular during this period. In the second half of the nineteenth century, Brooklyn experienced a decline as towns with greater industrial capacities, particularly those accessible by rail, gained economic significance. Consequently, there was little further development in the area of West Brooklyn Green. The area survives as a well-preserved collection of Greek Revival and Colonial-style residential architecture.
