Photographs show Admiral Nathaniel Riley Usher (1855-1931) and Navy Secretary Josephus Daniels (1862-1948) at the Brooklyn Navy Yard during the ceremony to mark the laying of the keel of the USS California (later renamed the USS New Mexico), Oct. 14, 1915. (New York Times, Oct. 15, 1915).
