Significance: The Haleakala National Park road system provides access to the summit and crater of the dormant volcano, Haleakala, showcasing striking views and native Hawaiian ecosystems. It represents the traditional NPS approach to road design and development with unique features created by local volcanic and seismic activity. Haleakala Highway was designed and built by the NPS and the Bureau of Public Roads during the Great Depression.
