Joyce Estate, Commemorative Marker, Chippewa National Forest Road 2144, 3 miles north of County Road 335, Grand Rapids, Itasca County, MN

description

Summary

Significance: Located in the Main Cabin Compound (southeast) of the Main Cabin, the Commemorative Marker was erected in 1974 to celebrate the Forest Service's purchase of the former Joyce Estate for public recreational use as part of the Chippewa National Forest. An undated Forest Service photograph documents that the marker's east side originally contained a metal plaque inscribed "In Memory of Beatrice Joyce Kean and Her Father David Gage Joyce." The plaque was removed, presumably by vandals, before 1986. ... Standing three feet high, the marker is a simple, rectangular, fieldstone and concrete block, with slightly battered sides. It harmonized well with its rustic setting.
