McKim Free School, 1120 East Baltimore Street, Baltimore, Independent City, MD

Significance: This Greek Doric structure, the most archeologically accurate example in Baltimore, set the standards for the city's early school architecture. Founded and endowed by John McKim, the private McKim Free School was built in 1833 for his son, Isaac McKim, based on the designs of William Howard and William Small. The granite facade, with its monolithic columns, is derived from the Temple of Athena and Hephasestus (The Theseum) in Athens. The north wing of the Acropolis' propylaea provided the design for the side elevations. Forming a single space, the interior is comparable to a cella in a Greek temple.
