Reps House, 102 Needham Place, Ithaca, Tompkins County, NY
Summary
2011 Leicester B. Holland Prize, Entry
Significance: The Reps residence is located at the corner of Needham Place and Kline Road on the Edge of the Cornell Heights Historic Disctict and the Village of Cayuga Heights in Ithaca, New York. The Original House, which was a pre-fab construction built in 1954 by National Homes Corporation with standard pre-designed plans, has rectangular massing as is clad with vertical wood siding painted light blue with a low-pitched side-gabled rood. The two story addition, which was designed by Thomas Canfield, a colleague of the owner at Cornell University was made of hollow concrete blocks and was added in 1961. Although the method of construction of the addition and the way it connected to the original building is interesting, the significance of the house is more related to the owner, John Reps, Professor Emeritus at Cornell University, who is knows as the Father of Modern American City Planning History, and has lived there with his family from the day of Completion.
