"The stained lines indicate the Yankee lines from White Oak Swamp to Mechanicsville and the lines of their retreat to their gun boats on James River. The stained dots on Chickahominy are pontoon bridges placed by the Yankees for their army to cross. The Yankee lines consist of fires, fortifications, redoubts, turretts, and rifle pits and immense abatis."--Page caption
