Southern Branch of the National Home for Disabled Volunteer Soldiers, Bakery, Between Harris & Black Avenues 0.1 mile west of McClellan Avenue, Hampton, Hampton, Virginia

description

Summary

Significance: Building 93 was constructed as the Home Bakery in 1936 to accompany the Main Dining Hall in providing food for the entire facility. At the time Building 93 was constructed, it was installed with the most modern electric ovens. The electric ovens eliminated the coal-fired ovens of the previous bakery, which had to be tended by firemen through the night. In addition, the new machinery was compact in structure and well-placed, making the baking process more efficient. It is not believed the bakery was built to any specific military standard.
