Summary

For an overview of the Food Service Buildings, see HABS DC-349-CB
Significance: The General Store/Canteen is significant as a context structure that contributes to the broader historic character of the St. Elizabeths West Campus. The building, formerly a single-family residence, was relocated to the site in 1916 and provided retail service to meet the daily needs of the population on the campus, including patients, staff, and visitors. The wood-framed vernacular building has a simple plan with hip roof and wide overhanging eave. The building exemplifies the partial self-sufficiency of the campus as it developed in the early twentieth century.
