Steel manufacture, Allegheny-Ludlum. It's the end of a short episode for this scrap steel accumulated from the croppings of tubing and piping right in the steel mill. This scrap will be charged into steel converters once again, and again will emerge as refined steel for industrial production. Steel mills themselves provide large portions of the scrap metal needed for production

Steel manufacture, Allegheny-Ludlum. This is a four-high hot rolling mill, which reduces hot steel into ribbons about thirty-five inches wide, to be used either in coils or cut lengths. The steel enters the first of these electrically driven rollers at a thickness of about six inches and emerges, three times as fast, from the fourth only about two inches thick

Steel manufacture, Allegheny-Ludlum. Here is a billet of alloy steel entering a mill in which it will be converted into the desired shape. It will emerge as a bar, perhaps round, perhaps square, and will eventually find its way into one of thousands of uses to which steel is put in our defense production

Steel manufacture, Allegheny-Ludlum. This slab of stainless steel is being rolled by a three-high 100 inch plate mill to bring it to the proper length, finish, thickness and width. It will eventually be used as tank armor

Steel manufacture, Allegheny-Ludlum. Scrap from areas near the steel mill is delivered by motor truck. The melting of alloy steel for defense production necessitates constant delivery of scrap iron and steel to the mills. The overhead magnet will deposit the steel in a loader, which then carries it to an open hearth or electric furnace. In the neighborhood of forty percent of all steel produced comes from scrap metal
