Officially called the Newport Southbank Bridge, the bridge opened in 1872 as a railroad bridge connecting Cincinnati to Newport. The bridge was restored as a pedestrian-only span in late 2001 by the city of Newport, Kentucky and Southbank Partners, an economic development group.
