Significance: One of eight Marine Hospitals designed by Robert Mills, a famous early American architect and engineer who was a protege of Thomas Jefferson, appointed architect of Public Buildings by Andrew Jackson. Mills designed many important Washington landmarks, including the Washington Monument.
