Walter-Kautz Farm, River Road (Smithfield Township), Shawnee on Delaware, Monroe County, PA
Summary
Significance: The Walter-Kautz farm is a good example of a nineteenth century farm in the Delaware Valley. The farm's prosperity and subsequent alterations and additions throughout the centuries demonstrates the increasing need for and specificity of outbuildings. The ingenuity of the residents is also demonstrated in the construction of the corn crib wagon shed and washhouse-woodshed whereby two or more separate functions were combined into one structure.
The location of the outbuilding relative to the house exemplifies the necessary functional relationships between agricultural and domestic chores.
