William Crosby House, 1 Pleasant Street, Nantucket, Nantucket County, MA
Summary
Significance: In 1837 whaling merchant William Crosby commissioned Henry Macy to build a house at One Pleasant Street. This building is a good example of the Greek Revival tradition in nineteenth century Nantucket, reflecting the town's prosperity in its architectural scale, proportions and details. This two and a half story house sits on a high basement and has clapboard siding, a three-bay pilastered facade, triple-sash windows, square belvedere and gable roofs. The house was modified in the late 19th and 20th centuries to accommodate new functions as an inn and later an art gallery.
