Williamsburg, Virginia. The capitol of the Virginia colony during the eighteenth century which was reconstructed and restored to its original state by John D. Rockefeller Jr. during the 1930s. The Raleigh Tavern, erected prior to 1742. This large frame building was the outstanding tavern of its day. Here the Burgesses met; royal governors dined; and the Phi Beta Kappa Society is said to have been founded. The tavern was destroyed by fire in 1859 and reconstructed on original foundations in 1930
