A.R.C. in North Russia. Major Morris, U.S.A. in command of the American engineering forces in North Russia. The engineers were an indispensible part of the American forces in North Russia, because everything in the line of tools and skilled artisans was nowhere to be found in Archangel, and everything of a skilled nature in the whole district was done by the engineers, who became General Utility men in the widest meaning of the words. With Major Morris is Lieut. Giffels, who came back from the front to get A.R.C. supplies for this men. They had lost nearly everything they possessedin the course of their rapid campaigning was through the deep wooded swamps where it was impossible to make any progress with the weight of the normal pack carried by the American soldier. The men therefore were frequently compelled to discard the greater part of their equipment. Ordinarily when men arrived at the hospitals, they were practically without equipment and without any toilet requisites, even a toothbrush

U.S. forces establish bases in Liberia. Private Napoleon Edward Taylor, first member of the U.S. forces to land in Liberia at the request of the African Negro republic, explains how a sub-machine gun, or "Tommy gun," works. Liberia was originally founded in 1821 by Negro freedmen under American auspices. The American forces, chiefly composed of Negro units, are constructing bridges, improving roads, building air bases and strengthening fortifications throughout the country. Edwin Barclay the Republic's President, welcomed the American soldiers by saying "The future of Liberia is inextricably bound up in the victory of those nations fighting for the Four Freedoms annouced by President Franklin D. Roosevelt."
