Citations of Individual Production Merit awarded. The first five citations of Individual Production Merit have been awarded to five war workers, War Production Drive Headquarters has announced. The citation is the highest award conferred for individual achievement. It is granted only for ideas or suggestions that have an outstanding effect on the war effort. Walter P. Hill of Detroit, Michigan, a sales and development manager for the Wolverine Tube Division of the Calumet and Hecla Consolidated Copper Co., developed an idea of prime military importance. All that can be said is that he developed the "overall spum and primer for an ammunition primer which is now being utilized for large manufacturers of primer tubes. This effects a saving of metal, increased production with present facilities and lower overall production costs." The rest has been restricted by military authorities

In the confusion that followed the debacle at Smyrna, many aged people were separated from their families Pathetic scenes were witnessed everywhere.... One of the first acts of the ARC was to gather these old people together and try to locate their relatives. Many were restored to their families. Some (whose families probably perished) still remain on hand, but now they are well cared for by local authorities under the patronage of the Red Cross.

Veteran Polish weather expert joins staff of Smithsonian Institution. Washington, D.C. March 14. With home, laboratory, and invaluable records of years presumably lost in the recent Polish War, Dr. Henryk Arctowski, of the University of Lvov, one of Poland's foremost scientists and former Antarctic explorer, has started at the Smithsonian Institution the monumental job of determining direct effects of changes in the Sun's radiation on weather conditions on Earth. Recognized in all countries as one of the greatest living authorities on world weather, Dr. Arctowski is continuing his studies in efforts to find relationships between solar conditions and rainfall, barometric pressure, etc., at various places on Earth. His earliest meteorlogical observation began as a young geologist on the Antarctic exploring ship Belgica in 1897-99. For release morning papers of March 18 - 40

From a population of 30,000 people before the war Kowel is now reduced to 24,000 inhabitants. In the surrounding district approximately one-fourth of the population has died of typhus, entire villages having been wiped out. The local medical authorities realize the seriousness of the present epidemic, but they are terribly handicapped in their efforts by the lack of medicines, supplies, hospital equipment and trained personnel. The Commission has recommended united effort to deal effectively with the situation in Poland and prevent the spread of typhus to Western Europe and America
