A view of the American Red Cross Canteen #13, at Champs de Mars, Paris, France. This is one of the largest canteens in France, being made up of fifty tents, which were formerly used as a hospital at Chateau Thierry. There are 1,400 beds and a large canteen which is operated 24 hours a day. An enlisted man can get a nice, clean bed for one franc (about 18 cents) which includes a hot or cold bath, towels, soap, baggage checked and a shoeshine. The meals are supplied at the following rates: Breakfast: 50 centimes (about 9 cents); dinner: 75 centimes (about 14 cents) and supper: 50 centimes

"Almost as good as cake" the French youngsters say of the Red Cross buns which supplement "dejeuner" at their school canteens. Red Cross physicians examining the children of the crowded districts of Paris found that they were delicate and subject to illness from undernourishment. In many of these wards the mothers are working in munitions factories or other war industries and the children must take the noon meal at the school canteens. The menu of many of these canteens is now being supplemented by American beans, meat, flour, jam, sugar and "buns"

Paris. The members of the A.E.F. liked jam so much that the girls at the American Red Cross Canteens could not open the cans fast enough. Capt. S.A. Mitchell, A.R.C., knew of the problem and invented a can-opener that can be worked with very little effort and leaves no jagged edges to hurt tender hands. Capt.
