Aboard a trap fishing boat, delivering fish at the freezer. Most of the trap boats are owned by the freezers. Men work on shares, the company gets fifty percent. Prices are set according to days supply in all traps. As in almost all cases traps share equally in a day's run. Fishermen get little money either way--they either sell little fish for a comparatively decent price, or much fish for very little. Provincetown, Massachusetts

9 year old cash girl in Gafer Department store. At first glance the home conditions with a one-armed father and several children in the family would indicate that her small wages were needed, but when we found that the father is able to do certain kinds of work, and that they have relatives who are well-to-do, there was no doubt that the family could get along without her working. In almost all the cases investigated, the need for the child's earning was very small. Location: Mobile, Alabama.

Wagner of New York, author of the Wagner Labor Relations Act, and Senator David I. Walsh, (right) of Massachusetts, who sponsored the bill in the United States Senate. They were together as they heard the Supreme Court uphold the validity of the act today--unanimously in the cases of the Jones and Laughlin Steel Corp., and the Washington, Virginia and Maryland Coach Co. The decision was hailed by the government as one of its greatest victories in court.

Mother and children hulling strawberries at Johnson's Hulling Station. Cyral (in baby cart) is 2 yrs. old this May and works steadily hulling berries. At times Cyral would rest his little head on his arm and fall asleep for a few minutes and then wake up, commencing all over to hull berries. This is an extreme case - by no means typical and while it was found in this investigation that children 3, 4, 5 yrs. were accustomed to start out before sun-up to pick berries, we have not found many cases such as this. "Hell's Half Acre," a row of disreputable houses at the edge of the mill settlement at Avondale. These houses harbor the scum of the negroes and whites of the vicinity, and are separated from the mill village by a shallow ditch, which gave Gov. Comer, owner of the mills, the excuse that they were not on the mill property when the question of their removal was taken to him a while ago. A prominent social worker told me that not only do the mill people patronize these resorts, but that the broken down mill girls end up in these houses and that there are, on court record, three cases within a year of girls under fourteen years of age ruined in Hell's Half Acre. Told me, that there are innumerable instances showing the bad moral influence of the cotton mill settlement. (See report on Avondale conditions). Location: Birmingham, Alabama.

Civilian defense. Extremely valuable in battling incendiary bombs is the stirrup pump operated by three, or in cases of emergency, two men. The volunteer worker closest to the camera is pumping water from the bucket on the reef, while the man barely visible in the center replenishes the water supply from another bucket. The third volunteer, holding the nozzle, which may be adjusted to provide either a spray or a steady stream of water, is spraying magnesium incendiary bomb and the area around it. New improved pumps are being produced in American factories
