A secial bomb made of steel, shown in the foreground, and designed to withstand pressures up to 500 lbs. to the square inch is used to show the progress of the flame and the rise in pressure which may be recorded photographically during the gas explosions under carefully controlled conditions. The camera, where the recordings are made, is in front of Dr. Ernest F. Flock of the Bureau of Standards, carries its film on a drum which may be revolved up to 4,000 revolutions per minute, this camera also records a neon light flashing at a thousandth of a second. The independent effects of pressure, temperature and charge composition upon flame speed and explosion ratio may be made with this equipment, 8/26/37

First Chinese seamen granted shore leave in wartime America. Chinese seamen on United Nations' vessels may now obtain shore leave in American ports. Heretofore, because of the large number of desertions by Chinese crew members, alien seamen of Chinese nationality have been detained on board when their ships touched American ports. As a result of conferences between representatives of the Chinese Embassy, the Recruitment and Manning Organization of War Shipping Administration, and the Immigration and Naturalization Service of the Department of Justice, Chinese seamen may now be granted shore leave if guarantees are given that they will not desert. After delivering the captain's laundry, this Chinese messboy aboard a British vessel will have his first visit in New York. He is one of a number of Chinese seamen who were recently permitted shore leave for the first time in the United States under wartime conditions

9 year old cash girl in Gafer Department store. At first glance the home conditions with a one-armed father and several children in the family would indicate that her small wages were needed, but when we found that the father is able to do certain kinds of work, and that they have relatives who are well-to-do, there was no doubt that the family could get along without her working. In almost all the cases investigated, the need for the child's earning was very small. Location: Mobile, Alabama.

Metcalfe Walling, Administrator of the Public Contracts Division of the Labor Department, told the Senate Labor Committee today that subcontractors had used a 'legal dodge' to avoid compliance with the Walsh-Healy Act. Something New in Taxing Line. A scene at Podgoritza, Montenegro, showing the housing conditions. Note that there is not a chimney in sight. As there was a tax on chimney in the country under the old regime, the people preferred to let the smoke from their fires find an outlet through the windows. This led to a prevalence of eye and other diseases. American Red Cross doctors doing relief work in Montenegro say that the chimney tax scheme led to conditions that have made 60 percent of the civilian population tubercular. To combat this the Red Cross has inaugurated an educational campaign on sanitary living conditions

Public Roads Chief gropes for answers. Washington, D.C., Feb. 24. Thomas H. McDonald, Chief of the Bureau of Public Roads, Department of Agriculture, seemed to grope for the answers to questions asked him today by the Senate Banking and Currency Subcommittee. First witness before the committee bearing on the Bulkley Bill providing for $6,000,000,000 system of superhighways in the U.S., financed by tolls, McDonald declared that toll systems had proved unsuccessful as a means of financing European superhighways. At the same time, he said: "Because of different conditions there is nothing to indicate that a toll system would not be successful here," 2/24/38
