Basil Roberts and James Hopper, both 12 years old, go to school when in session and work at Coleman Bros. Zinc Mine, Aurora, Mo., Saturdays and holidays, culling "waste" from the zinc ore on the "dumps." Their fathers work in zinc mines nearby. These boys told me no boys were permitted to work down in the mines, and said they were the boys working in the vicinity; which seemed to be about true.  Location: Aurora, Missouri.

Mother works in the same mill; father is a canvasser (and shiftless). Said, "I'm de father of 11 children." The baby in the girl's arms is one they are keeping for another woman. The mother would not get in the photo. Alfred had bad eyes this morning (influenza apparently) and mop[p]ing them with a filthy rag. One of the little ones had the same trouble. The prairie-wagon home of a family of itinerant beet workers, now camped near Ft. Collins, Colo. Street family. The children 7- 8- 10- and 12 work steadily and I saw the tiny girl pulling beets after sunset on the following Sunday, and they had not yet finished. The father told me "We got squeezed out of the mountains," one of the neighbors said they has been chased out because they wouldn't send their children to school. Living on the edge of Ft. Slovenly kitchen living-room of family of Alfred Benoit, 191 N. Front St., a sweeper in Bennett Mill; has been there for two months. Mother works in the same mill; father is a canvasser (and shiftless). Said, "I'm de father of 11 children." The baby in the girl's arms is one they are keeping for another woman. The mother would not get in the photo. Alfred had bad eyes this morning (influenza apparently) and mopping them with a filthy rag. One of the little ones had the same trouble.
