Making willow plumes under unsanitary conditions. A dirty home, the father and several friends had been rushing the growler and booze was literally flowing around over table and floor. The father is a truck-driver out of work. The mother, Freddie (11yrs. old) and Antoinette (8 yrs. old) all work $1.50 to $2.00 a week now, "but we make $3.00 a week in summer when we can work all day and not go to school." 3:30 P.M. Picking nuts in dirty basement. The dirtiest imaginable children were pawing over the nuts, eating lunch on the table, etc. Mother had a cold, blew her nose frequently (without washing hands) and the dirty handkerchief reposed comfortably on the table and close to the nuts and nut meats. The father picks now. "No work to do at any business." (Has a cobbler's shop in the room.) They said the children didn't pick near. (Probably a temporary respite.) See 2685. Stringing wooden buttons (button moulds) in a crowded home, Williamsburg, Massachusetts. Mrs. Weeks and her children 13 years, 11 years, 7 years and her grand children 7 years, 5 years and 4 years old, all working after school, holidays, etc., stringing these button moulds. Mrs. Weeks said that the most they ever made was from $7 to $10 a month; usually less. The house was crowded up and the floor not very clean. Of a family of 7 children, all but 2 work stringing tags. The oldest child is 12. The nurse of the school which these children attend, reports that they are continually being sent home because of their dirty condition. A little fellow who looked about 6 was quite an expert. The children received 20 cents for stringing a thousand tage i.e. tags they tie a knot in a piece of string, and run the string thru sic the tag. They moisten the ends of their fingers in their mouths to tie the knots. They can string about a thousand tags in half an hour. One member of a second family which is stringing tags has impetigo, or skin disease, according to the school nurse. Location: Newark, New Jersey

I found a girl of 13 working at embroidery in a far corner of a dimly lighted room. The light came from a small gas jet which was high above the girl's head, in the center of the room. She was working on a black dress which was outlined in black pencil. For this dress elaborately embroidered, she received ninety cents. She could embroider one dress in about three or four days if she kept at it steadily. She had been working since 4 P.M., and it was the 7 P.M. She expected to stop at 10:30. This happens several nights in the week when there is plenty of work, the youngest children working until 9 P.M. and the rest until 11:00 or later. Civarro family, 2106 Second Avenue, second floor back, working on patriotic flag pins. They get 3 cents a gross for inserting pin and putting onto card. Mrs. Civarro with her three-months-old baby in her arms is working with four children aged 10, 9, 7 and 5, and a younger child that does not work (2 years). They work irregularly (as Mrs. Civarro does the janitor work for the building which is in fair condition, and receives in return only the rent free of three small rooms), and their net income for this work is $2 a week. 8 members of the family sleep in one small inner room. Stringing wooden buttons (button moulds) in a crowded home, Williamsburg, Massachusetts. Mrs. Weeks and her children 13 years, 11 years, 7 years and her grand children 7 years, 5 years and 4 years old, all working after school, holidays, etc., stringing these button moulds. Mrs. Weeks said that the most they ever made was from $7 to $10 a month; usually less. The house was crowded up and the floor not very clean. Feb. 29, 1912 I found nine families (including the janitress) at work on feathers or with traces of the day's work still on the floor. Still other families were reported to be doing the work also, but were not home. The little five-year-old helps some. She was sighing, "Tired." Her sister (about 10 years old) works until 9 P.M. some nights although she is near-sighted. 6 P.M. Making hair-brushes. Hausner family, 310 E. 71 St., N.Y. Frank is 6 yrs old. and John is 12. The mother had a sore throat and wore a great rag rapped around it, but she took it off for the photo. They said they all (including the 6 yr old) worked until 10 P.M. when busy. Their neighbor corroborated this. She said, "It's a whole lot better for the boys than doin' nothin'." The mother said the night work hurts their eyes and John said so too. He was not very enthusiastic about the beauties of work. All together, they make about $2 a week. Father is a motorman. 6 P.M. Jan. 31, -12. Location: New York, New York (State)

Mrs. Guadina, living in a rear house at 231 Mulberry St. N.Y., a dirty poverty-stricken home, and making a pittance by finishing pants. On the trunk is the work of four days. She was struggling along, (actually weak for want of food) trying to finish this batch of work so she could get the pay.
