Making willow plumes under unsanitary conditions. A dirty home, the father and several friends had been rushing the growler and booze was literally flowing around over table and floor. The father is a truck-driver out of work. The mother, Freddie (11yrs. old) and Antoinette (8 yrs. old) all work $1.50 to $2.00 a week now, "but we make $3.00 a week in summer when we can work all day and not go to school." Photo at 4 P.M. Witness F. A. Smith. Home of Thomas Murry, 8 1/2 Milton St., rear, top floor, Worcester, Massachusetts. Mother and children, 6 yrs., 8 yrs. two of 12 yrs. old. The 3-year-old helps a little. Earn $1.50 to $3.00 a week working on hose supporters. Father makes $15 a week. Two other children work: one gets $7 to $11 a week, one gets $4 a week. Mrs. Weeks and her children 13 years, 11 years, 7 years and her grand children 7 years, 5 years and 4 years old, all working after school, holidays, etc., stringing these button moulds. Mrs. Weeks said that the most they ever made was from $7 to $10 a month; usually less. The house was crowded up and the floor not very clean. High up on the top floor of a rickety tenement, 214 Elizabeth St., N.Y., this mother and her two children, boy 10 years old and the girl 12, were living in a tiny one room, and were finishing garments. The garments were packed under the bed and on top of it and around the room. Said the make from $1 to $2 a week, and the boys [sic] earns some selling newspapers. I could not get their name. Mrs. Montemora, Fifty-five years old, is janitress for a large tenement, 133 W. Houston St., (lives Apt. 7) housing 26 families. When not tending the furnace or occupied with other duties for others and her own family, she makes flowers, assisted by her niece Josephine, 12 years old. They both work until 10:00 P.M. frequently. Photo was taken at 2:30 P.M., Feb 2, 1912, a school-day, and their only explanation was, "She just stayed out." Making buds. Several adult men relatives live with them. Civarro family, 2106 Second Avenue, second floor back, working on patriotic flag pins. They get 3 cents a gross for inserting pin and putting onto card. Mrs. Civarro with her three-months-old baby in her arms is working with four children aged 10, 9, 7 and 5, and a younger child that does not work (2 years). They work irregularly (as Mrs. Civarro does the janitor work for the building which is in fair condition, and receives in return only the rent free of three small rooms), and their net income for this work is $2 a week. 8 members of the family sleep in one small inner room. The mother had a sore throat and wore a great rag rapped around it, but she took it off for the photo. They said they all (including the 6 yr old) worked until 10 P.M. when busy. Their neighbor corroborated this. She said, "It's a whole lot better for the boys than doin' nothin'." The mother said the night work hurts their eyes and John said so too. The dirtiest imaginable children were pawing over the nuts, eating lunch on the table, etc. Mother had a cold, blew her nose frequently (without washing hands) and the dirty handkerchief reposed comfortably on the table and close to the nuts and nut meats. The father picks now. "No work to do at any business." (Has a cobbler's shop in the room.) They said the children didn't pick near. (Probably a temporary respite.) See 2685.
