Eastman today told a Senate Interstate Commerce Subcommittee that he believed the 10 per cent rate increase granted the railroads last summer has been "Of more benefit to the motor carriers than to the railroads." Former Van Swerigen counsel appears before senate railroad financing committee. Washington, D.C., Oct. 20. John P. Murphy, General Counsel for the Van Swerigan Brothers during the years in which they expanded modest real estate holdings into a vast railroad empire, was the first witness today as the senate railroad financing committee resumed hearings. Murphy denied the committee's accusation that acquisition of the Missouri Pacific railroad by the Van Swerigans in 1929 was counter to ICC policy.

Unless the railroads show greater cooperation in the future, Government ownership is inevitable, Mark W. Potter, former ICC Commissioner, told the Senate Rail Inquiry Committee today. Senate Interstate Commerce Committee opens hearings today on transportation. Washington, D.C., April 3. The Senate Interstate Commerce Committee got off today for a series of hearings on public transportation problems, but the news value was considerably overshadowed by the appearance of Robert Montgomery in another committee at the same time. Carl R. Gray, Chairman of the president's committee of six on railroads, told the Committee that his group felt that an independent transportation board is needed to regulate all transportation, the board to be outside of the ICC jurisdiction. Gray urged that the federal board which he proposed handle water carriers as part of its duties. 4-3- 39

Senate Committee questions Pennsy head. Washington, D.C., Dec. 15. Martin W. Clement, President of the Pennsylvania Railroad, today told the Senate Rail Inquiry that there had never been any objection from the Interstate Commerce Commission to salaries paid Directors of the road. At the same time, Clement admitted that his own salary had been increased from $60,000 to $100,000 on January 1, 1937. Senate Committee hears Van Swerigan official. Washington, D.C., May 11. known for many years as the closest business associate of the late Van Swerigan brothers, Herbert Fitzpatrick, Vice President and General council for two major units in vast Van Swerigan rail empire, was quizzed today by the Senate Committee investigating railroad financing. Chairman Wheeler charged that the late O.P. Van Swerigan acted "directly in defiance" of ICC orders by having the Van Swerigan-controlled Chesapeake and Ohio Railroad purchase in 1930 an option for stock of the Chicago and Illinois Railroad. Fitzpatrick answered by declaring the C&O voted to buy the option because "it was their judgement the O.&E. I[?] should properly be grouped with the C&O" roger brennan, counsel for Fitzpatrick, is shown on left, 5/11/1937

Edsel Ford, President of the Ford Motor Co., today told the Senate Rail Inquiry that the Fords sold the Detroit Toledo and Ironton Railroad in 1929 because of "restrictions" imposed by the Interstate Commerce Commission.
