If we have to make speeches until morning!' Austin on Senate filibuster. Washington, D.C., July 1. The Senate met at noon yesterday and kept going until 1:53 the next morning. Reason was that a republican bloc, opposed to allowing the President continued power to devalue the dollar and the Treasury to dip into the $2,000,000,000 stabilization fund, filibustered until midnight, at which time the power was supposed to lapse. Some opinion held that the power could again be granted, even after that time, so Senator Warren R. Austin told reporters that he had a list of 10 Senators who would speak if it held the Senate in session until dawn. The monetary authorization was, as was promised, 'talked to death'

Washington, D.C., June 19. 2,000 delegates assembled in the Mayflower Hotel today for the formal opening of the 21st annual convention of the United States Junior Chamber of Commerce. Caustically condemning the dictatorship of Hitler and Mussolini, Perry Pipkin, Tennessee, president of the gathering, today declared that isolation is a dead issue and that the United States must be inseparably bound to England and France if the 'Atlantic Civilization' is to survive. Pipkin recommended to the delegates that immediate steps be taken to work out a referendum system to reflect an organization opinion of such issues as a national defense. The pending Black-Connery Wage and Hour Bill was bitterly denounced today by Harvey Willson, Manager of the National Upholstery and Drapery Textile Association, when he appeared before the House and Senate Labor Committee. Pictureing the bill as a long step towrd complete governemtn control of industry and labor such as exists in European countries, Willson expressed the opinion that it would wholly unworkable as a law and would only result in confusions in industry far exceeding that connected with the attempt to administer the late NRA. 6/9/37

Hayes office General Counsel protests Neely Bill to regulate movie sales. Washington, D.C., April 3. Charles C. Pettijohn, general counsel for the Hayes office, movieland's self-censoring group, was on of the first witnesses before the Senate Interstate Commerce Subcommittee which heard actor Robert Montgomery this morning. Gesturing wildly, he eloquently pleaded against passage of Senator Neely's bill to prohibit 'block booking' and 'blind selling', movie trade practices which remove theater owner's choice in selecting his movie bill. He offered to bring Walt Disney before the Committee to prove the disastrous effects of the bill if made law, saying that the biggest hits are seldom expected by either producers or theater managers. General Hollywood expert opinion was that 'Snow white and the Seven Dwarfs' would never sell, he said. 4-3-39
