Chickamauga Dam and powerhouse. View of generator hall, looking towards reception room end. Upper row of three large windows is overlook for reception room. Three windows beneath are those of control room (compare with K 2313). Balcony for communication and view in front of control room windows. Roof is carried by rigid steel arches which spring from crane rail level; steel purlins, exposed precast concrete slab. Windows of hall are glass brick for insulation. Translucent plastic discs suspended from standard highboy lighting units conceal view or direct reflection of filaments and reflect spill light onto ceiling, thus generally brightening the space. Floor is ceramic tile; walls, glazed structural tile up to crame rail, exposed concrete above

Manpower. Negro bomber plant workers. American manpower draws its skills from various racial groups alike. Here, in a large Eastern bomber plant, huge transparent plastic bomber noses are being conditioned for installation on planes which will carry America's offensive to the far corners of the world. Glenn L. Martin Bomber Plant. Baltimore, Maryland
Production. War housing trailers. Overcoming metal shortage is a big problem in trailer manufacture. Western Trailer Company of Los Angeles has been able to replace metal fenders (wheel wells) successfully with plastic material made by a new process. Paper of forty pounds weight runs from rolls to a tent containing a glue-like solution. After it absorbs this solution, the operator breaks its stiffness by wadding and squeezing
Production. Airplane manufacture, general. After lucite (a shatter-proof plastic "glass") is formed for transparent enclosures, the edges are cut to the right size on an enemy wheel at the North American Aviation plant at Inglewood, California. This plant produces the battle-tested B-25 ("Billy Mitchell") bomber, used in General Doolittle's raid on Tokyo, and the P-51 ("Mustang") fighter plane, which was first brought into prominence by the British raid on Dieppe

Production. B-17F heavy bomber. G.H. Knight and A. Johnson prepare the base for a plastic pattern of parts for B-17F (Flying Fortress) bombers at the Boeing plant at Seattle. The patterns will be reproduced on a Kellar machine. The Flying Fortress, a four-engine heavy bomber capable of flying at high altitudes, has performed with great credit in the South Pacific, over Germany and elsewhere
Production. War housing trailers. The floor of a war housing trailer is laid over a chassis in inverted position at the Los Angeles plant of Western Trailer Company. This facilitates installation of wheel wells of paper plastic and painted with asphaltic preservative paint. Drive screws hold the plastic wheel well in place

Production. War housing trailers. A water supply system is installed in a war housing trailer under construction at the Los Angeles plant of Western Trailer Company. The transparent plastic tubing used for water lines bends readily, and may be sharply and permanently bent by the application of heat. It withstands normal city water supply pressures, but it is not suitable for hot water lines .
Production. War housing trailers. The top of a war housing trailer is assembled and finished in the Los Angeles plant of Western Trailer Company. Corners are plastic, rounded sections made of paper especially treated to give it great hardness and durability
Forest Products Laboratory, Madison, Wisconsin. The Forest Products Laboratory has developed from lignin a black plastic which looks like bakelite. Wood contains about eighty percent cellulose fibre and twenty percent lignin, which has heretofore been considered waste. A laboratory workman is dumping a lignin sawdust compound into the digestor, the first step in the processing of the plastic
Production. War housing trailers. The front end section of a war housing trailer goes into place at the Los Angeles plant of Western Trailer Company. Plastic wheel wells, which will shortly be covered by cabinet work, are made of paper impregnated with a special hardening solution and formed over molds. This material is a very satisfactory substitute for the steel formerly used
Production. Airplane manufacture, general. Forming lucite (a shatter-proof plastic "glass") for war plane enclosures requires extreme care. Here an employee at North American Aviation's Inglewood, California plant cleans a mold with compressed air before forming the part. This plant produces the battle-tested B-25 ("Billy Mitchell") bomber, used in General Doolittle's raid on Tokyo, and the P-51 ("Mustang") fighter plane, which was first brought into prominence by the British raid on Dieppe
Production. B-24E (Liberator) bombers at Willow Run. Setting lights of transparent plastic in the nose for a B-24E (Liberator) bomber in Ford's big Willow Run plant. The Liberator is capable of operation at high altitudes and over great ranges on precision bombing missions. It has proved itself an excellent performer in the Pacific, in Northern Africa, Europe and the Aleutians. Ford's Willow Run Plant, Michigan
Plastic tableware for the Navy. A set of plastic tableware for naval officers' table. These streamlined dishes replace crockery and aluminum tableware previously used on naval vessels
Plastic tableware for the Navy. This plastic navy mess tray replaces trays formerly made of vital metal. In addition to this tray, seamen are provided with plastic dishware designed for durability
Plastic tableware for the Navy. Durable plastic tableware, designed to replace china and aluminum dishes used on naval vessels, is made of impregnated fabric molding material. Here the operator weighs out the correct amount of material for a molding operation as shown in the press at the left
Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. By using a polarized light apparatus to take pictures of plastic models of turbine nuts and bolts, Dr. Hetenyi, Hungarian-born research engineer at the Westinghouse Electric and Manufacturing Company, has discovered how to make this fastening device up to forty per cent stronger. He found that nuts and bolts with broad shoulders and tapered bodies distribute stress on threads more evenly than do ordinary nuts and bolts
Plastic tableware for the Navy. Plastic bowls that will be used for Navy tableware are removed from the press. The rough edges, called "flash" are later cleaned off
Plastic tableware for the Navy. Removing the rough edges of plastic Navy tableware. These ten-inch plates are replacing less durable types of dishware which are susceptible to breakage during rough sailing and under heavy gunfire
Plastic tableware for the Navy. Streamlined plastic tableware for the Navy features a non-slip, non-drip cup and saucer. Durable dishware is required in new naval specifications to reduce breakage and to conserve vital materials
Dr. Miklos Hatenyi, Hungarian-born research engineer at the Westinghouse electric and manufacturing company. He made various types of nuts and bolts, attached weights to the bottom of each model and heated them to "freeze" the stress lines, then cut slices from the center of each model and photographed the thin plastic sections to show which nut or bolt divided the "pull" among threads
