Millie, 13 years old last summer. Ignatio, 9 years old last summer. Jo, 6 years old last summer. Paresse Family, 4 Fly St., Buffalo, N.Y. All three worked in the Albion Canning Factory in the sheds (Jo, only a little) on peas, beans and corn. Jo was too small to get husks off the corn so they stopped his working. Millie and Ignatio made 40 to 50 cents a day each, at 8 cents and hour because the work was slack. Returned to Buffalo the last of October. Went out the last of May, losing about 11 weeks of school time. Millie would not go to school when she came back because she was behind the rest of the class. Was found out by the C.O.S. in January and was reported to truant officer and sent to school. Location: Buffalo, New York (State)

Photo of Ordinary's Certificate for Curtis Wynn, 9 years old (and therefore illegal). The Deputy Clerk told me "That was likely a clerical error." but I found five of these "errors" issued to children under 10 years old, one for a child aged 8. (The latter was later marked 'Void' but none of the rest were.) Rolly's teacher told me the family had moved, but that the boy was a mere baby with a lisp. The issuing of the certificates is very unbusinesslike. (See Vaughn's Report, Georgia. The Ordinary said, "I'm a practical man! The cotton mill people are the poorest paid workers in the country. Citations of Individual Production Merit awarded. The first five citations of Individual Production Merit have been awarded to five war workers, War Production Drive Headquarters has announced. The citation is the highest award conferred for individual achievement. It is granted only for ideas or suggestions that have an outstanding effect on the war effort. Walter P. Hill of Detroit, Michigan, a sales and development manager for the Wolverine Tube Division of the Calumet and Hecla Consolidated Copper Co., developed an idea of prime military importance. All that can be said is that he developed the "overall spum and primer for an ammunition primer which is now being utilized for large manufacturers of primer tubes. This effects a saving of metal, increased production with present facilities and lower overall production costs." The rest has been restricted by military authorities
