Significance: The Ashton Viaduct is one of the State of Rhode Island's largest engineering projects. It is a fine example of open spandrel design and, as the northern terminus of the Washington Highway, an important link in the state's highway system of the post-World War II era. The Ashton Viaduct is an inventoried contributing resource of the Blackstone River Valley National Heritage Corridor, spanning both the river and the Blackstone Canal Historic District. It is also adjacent to the Ashton (Cumberland) and Old Ashton (Lincoln) Historic Districts. It was determined eligible for listing in the National Register of Historic Places on January 10, 1989.
