Caption from caption list: Experimental Model basin at the Washington Navy Yard. Models of all Naval vessels are tested in this basin whether built in government or private yards. From these tests the necessary horsepower of engine required to drive the vessel a given rate of speed is determined.

During the administrations of Presidents Wilson, Harding, Coolidge, and Hoover, the National Photo Company supplied photographs of current news events in Washington, D.C., as a daily service to its subscribers. It also prepared sets of pictures on popular subjects and undertook special photographic assignments for local businesses and government agencies. The bulk of the images were created between 1909 and 1932. The photographic files of the National Photo Company, including an estimated 80,000 images (photographic prints and corresponding glass negatives), were acquired by the Library from its proprietor Herbert E. French in 1947.

Navy band develops first symphony orchestra. This photograph shows a portion of the U.S. Navy Band's 95-piece symphony orchestra for the first time. This orchestra, under the leadership of Lt. Charles Bentor, will give its first concert at the Navy Yard Sail Loft Tuesday night (11/26/35). The Navy Band has had a small orchestra in the past which played at various functions such as White House receptions and other official social gatherings. The new and larger orchestra will give a popular music concert later in the month. 11/25/35
