Hoover Dam, Arizona-Nevada Switchyard, U.S. Highway 93, Boulder City, Clark County, NV

description

Summary

Significance: It is one of six switchyards built between 1935 and 1952 to provide terminals for major transmission lines carrying electricity to markets in California, Nevada, and Arizona. All of these facilities were built by the Bureau of Reclamation as elements of the Boulder Canyon Project, and Reclamation documents referred to the entire complex of switchyards as "Boulder Switchyard." The Arizona-Nevada Switchyard is therefore a contributing element of the switchyard complex that was a major feature of the Hoover Dam development and contributed to the historical significance of the complex.

Dams under construction. Watts Bar Dam, shown here under construction, has a semi-outdoors type powerhouse with an enormous gantry crane (to the right of the picture) for installation and removal of units. The project is further distinguished by a control building which is entirely removed from the hydro plant, being located some 120 feet higher on top of a steep cliff and with direct connection to the switchyard behind. The windowless left wing of the control building houses the control room; the tower-like structure in the back accomodates air conditioning, restrooms, etc. The glass wall, upper level, contains the reception room with a broad semi-circular overlook terrace, the story below the terrace devoted to offices

Power and conservation. Chickamauga Dam, Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA). Insulators and bus wires in the switchyard of the TVA's Chickamauga Dam, located near Chattanooga, 471 miles above the mouth of the Tennessee River. The dam has an authorized power installation of 81,000 kilowatts, which can be increased to a possible ultimate of 108,000 kilowatts. The reservoir at the dam adds 377,000 acre feet of water to controlled storage on the Tennessee River system. The power that passes through this switchyard serves many useful domestic, agricultural and industrial uses

Baseballs autographed by six Presidents. 'Big Train's' gift to Baseball Hall of Fame. Washington, D.C., April 29. Walter Johnson's contribution to the National Baseball Museum at Cooperstown, New York, will be these six baseballs autographed by six presidents: Theodore Roosevelt, William H. Taft, Woodrow Wilson, Warren G. Harding, Calvin Coolidge, and Herbert Hoover. With the exception of the ones autographed by Presidents Theodore Roosevelt and Herbert Hoover, the balls are those which were thrown out at opening games pitched by Johnson during his regime as star pitcher for the Washington Senators. The ball autographed by President Hoover was presented to Johnson while he was manager of the Washington team while the one with the signature of Theodore Roosevelt was a special gift to the Big Train
