Mare Island Naval Shipyard, Commandant's Quarters, Walnut Avenue, west side near Eighth Street, Vallejo, Solano County, CA
Summary
Significance: Building A is a contributing element of the Mare Island Historic District. Building A (Quarters A) is highly significant as the key element of Captains' Row at Mare Island, a group of 12 homes built for the ranking officers assigned to the shipyard. This row of stately two-story homes was built in 1900 to replace a prior set of brick masonry senior officer family housing that was destroyed in an earthquake during 1898. Collectively, the homes of Captains' Row comprise one of the most important collections of historic military family housing anywhere in the United States. Quarters A, the home of the commandant, is sited at the center of this row, adjacent to the Headquarters (Building 47), at the end of a major east-west axis leading from the ferry slip, past the major shops, and between the Headquarters and Alden Park.
