Mare Island Naval Shipyard, Transportation Building & Gas Station, Third Street, south side between Walnut Avenue & Cedar Avenue, Vallejo, Solano County, CA
Summary
Significance: Building 231 is a contributing element of the Mare Island Historic District. It is significant chiefly for its direct association with the rail system at Mare Island. The 1918 building was used to repair locomotives for the extensive rail system at the shipyard. The existence of this locomotive repair facility - a rarity on a Navy station or any other military installation - illustrates graphically how important the rail system was to Mare Island, which was always as much an industrial facility as it was a Navy station.
