Mare Island Naval Shipyard, Forge Shop, Railroad Avenue, southwest corner of Railroad Avenue & Twelfth Street, Vallejo, Solano County, CA

description

Summary

Significance: Building 386/388/390 is a contributing element of the Mare Island Historic District. The significance of this building is both historical and architectural. Its construction in 1922 represented the beginning of the use of the Shipyard South area as a major shipbuilding operation. Building 386/388/390 and Building 680 together represent the core of the Shipyard South area. These two buildings, more than any other buildings on the island, were the sites of major contributions of Mare Island to the American war effort during World War II. Architecturally, this building is one of three monumental curtain-wall industrial buildings on Mare Island; the others are Buildings 680 and 271. Together these buildings represent some of the American's earliest and most significant examples of curtain wall shipyard building techniques.
