Mare Island Naval Shipyard, Hospital Wards, Cedar Avenue, eat side between Fourteenth Avenue & Cossey Street, Vallejo, Solano County, CA

description

Summary

Significance: Building H72 is a contributing element of the Mare Island Historic District. It is one of two "bookend" additions to the main hospital building (Building H1); the other is Building H80. Together, these bookends transformed fundamentally the operation of the Naval Hospital at Mare Island, from the functional as well as the architectural standpoint. Functionally, the two additions - this one built in 1926, the other in the 1930s - helped make the Naval Hospital into a major institution, probably tripling its capacity. Architecturally, the two Mission Revival additions introduced a new architectural program into the area, dwarfing in many respects the original Beaux Arts Building H1.
