Mare Island Naval Shipyard, Quarters M, Walnut Avenue, west side between Fifth & Seventh Streets, Vallejo, Solano County, CA

description

Summary

Significance: Building M is a contributing element of the Mare Island Historic District. Building M (Quarters M) is highly significant as an element of "Captains' Row" at Mare Island, a group of 12 homes built for the ranking officers assigned to the shipyard. This row of stately two-story homes was built in 1900 to replace a prior set of senior officer family housing that was destroyed in an earthquake during 1898. Collectively, the homes of Captains' Row comprise one of the most important collections of historic military family housing anywhere in the United States.
