Marine Corps Air Station Tustin, East of Red Hill Avenue between Edinger Avenue & Barranca Parkway, Tustin, Orange County, CA

description

Summary

Significance: MCAS Tustin was originally built to support the function of the LTA ships and later became a major center for Marine helicopter aviation on the West Coast. The lighter-than-air ship hangars represent a major engineering achievement of World War II, and remain among the largest wood-framed structures in the world. Together with their associated helium tank buildings and mooring mats, they form a discontiguous National Register District (National Register of Historic Places 1975). They mark a significant period of American history when the development of airships played a critical role in America's anti-submarine defense. They are part of a small group of seven similar blimp hangars built in the United States during 1942-1943 that remain intact at their original sites as of 1996.
