Named to new Treasury post. Washington, D.C., Sept. 21. Huntington Cairns, who has been in the Legal Division, U.S. Treasury, handling special problems in connection with customs, has been promoted to the position of Assistant General Counsel in charge of the opinion section and all legal matters arising in the Bureau of Customs. He is a native of Baltimore and graduate of the University of Maryland Law School, 1925. He entered the Government Service in 1934. 9/21/37

Life begins at 70. Washington, D.C., Feb. 3. Retired from the Bureau of Indian Affairs, U.S. Department of Interior, after 33 years of service, Mrs. Isabelle Haggett at 75 is now a co-ed at George Washington University, proving the old adage 'one is never to old to learn' still holds good. She retired from the government service in 1933 at the age of 70. Her worried expression in this photograph can be attributed to the fact she is now boning for the mid-year exams in English Romantic Poetry, 2-3-39

Women Ask President for Equal Rights Legislation. Fifty prominent members of the New National Woman's Party called at the White House today to ask the president's aid in passing an "Equal Rights Bill" in the next Congress. The bill would give women full equality in the government service, give married women citizenship in their own right and make women of the District of Columbia eligible to serve on juries, equal guardianship rights, and equal rights of inheritance and contract. New Assistant General Counsel of Treasury. Washington, D.C., Sept. 20. John Philip Wenchel was today named Assistant General Counsel for the Bureau of Internal Revenue, Succeeding Morrison Shafroth, resigned. A graduate of the University of Maryland in 1908, Wenchel practiced law in Baltimore until 1914 when he entered the Government Service. 9/20/37

New Assistant Secretary of Interior. Washington, D.C., Dec. 20. Ebert K. Berlew, of Pennsylvania, who was today nominated by President Roosevelt to be first assistant secretary of the interior. He succeeds Theodore Walters, who died a few weeks ago. Mr. Berlew has been in the government service for 27 years, most of the time in the Department of Interior, 122037
