New register of the Treasury. Washington, D.C., Sept. 2. Dr. Edward G. Dolan of Manchester, Conn. took the oath of office today as register of the Treasury succeeding the late W.W. Durbin. He is congratulated by Stephen B. Gibbons, Asst. Sec. of the Treasury, Center, and Postmaster General James A. Farley, right. Dr. Dolan was collector of Internal Revenue for the District of Connecticut from August 1934 to June 1935, was Chairman of the State Board of the N.R.A. and has been a member of the National Advisory Board of the W.P.A. until his recent resignation.

While the Treasury Department is temporarily withholding the names of alleged tax dodgers, Secretary Morgenthau appeared before a Joint Congressional Tax Committee today to recommend immediate legislative enactments to close loopholes in the Federal Tax laws. Arrive for special cabinet session. Washington, D.C., Sept. 14. With the exception of Attorney General Cummings, the entire cabinet met in special session with President Roosevelt today to consider the tense foreign situation and discuss domestic monetary and credit matters. Solicitor General Stanley Reed sat in the session for Attorney General Cummings. Revenue agents meet with Treasury officials. Washington, D.C., May 12. Internal Revenue agents from 37 key cities in the United States and Alaska began a four-day conference today with treasury officials to devise means of expediting and improving field audits of income tax returns. Secretary Morgenthau told the conferees that they had a big responsibility in connection with federal financing and budget balancing. New first deputy Comptroller of the Currency. Washington, D.C., Oct. 1. Secretary of the Treasury Henry Morgenthau today appointed his special assistant, Cyril B. Upham, as first deputy comptroller of the Treasury. Upham succeeds Marshall R. Diggs, who has been acting comptroller since the resignation of JFT O'Connor, the resignation of Diggs and Deputy Comptroller V.J. Oppegard were requested by the Sec. of the Treasury last Thursday, Upham, seems to quite Happy about the whole affair, 10/1/38

Increased business volume key to recovery. Hopkins new Executive Assistant. Washington, D.C., April 13. In his first Press Conference today, Edward J. Noble, newly appointed Assistant to Secretary of Commerce Harry Hopkins, told newsmen that he thought the key to recovery was to increase business volume. He said that if volume could be increased to a sufficiently high level, tax rates could be lowered without disturbing the government's revenue. 4-13-39

Closed old court; will open in? Frank J. Wideman, Assistant Attorney General in the Tax Division, will represent the government in the first case to go before the Supreme Court in the new building, and he holds the honor of arguing the last case to be heard in the old Supreme Court quarters. He has won 10 out of his last 11 cases. He represented the government, and won, in the Sandy-Fox case last session, which involved the Five Civilized Indian Tribes vis the United States. Informs President SEC ready to proceed with investigation of insurance companies. Washington, D.C., Jan. 24. William O. Douglas, Chairman of the Securities and Exchange Commission, leaving the White House today after reporting to President Roosevelt that the commission was ready to proceed with its investigation of insurance companies in connection with the present monopoly inquiry. He indicated the SEC would be concerned primarily with the investment and managerial phases of insurance company operation and said approximately $300,000 would be required to carry out the work in this calendar year, 1/24/38
