Naval Base Philadelphia-Philadelphia Naval Shipyard, Lift Bridge, Mouth of Reserve Basin, League Island, Philadelphia, Philadelphia County, PA
Summary
Significance: Planned as part of the pre-WWII enlargement of the shipyard in support of a two-ocean navy, the bridge was built to provide direct vehicular and rail access to the western portion of the Navy Yard. As part of a western access route to the base, the bridge helped to reduce wartime traffic congestion at the main gate on Broad Street. It is significant as a key element of the infrastructure improvements made during the pre-WWII build-up at the Navy Yard.
