Portrait of Colonel Elmer Ephraim Ellsworth from photographic negative in Brady's National Portrait Gallery

Photograph shows a full-length portrait of Elmer Ephraim Ellsworth (1837-1861). A lawyer from Mechanicsville, New York, Ellsworth enlisted as a Colonel in the U.S. Army at New York City in 1861. He was commissioned into the 11th Infantry (New York), on May 7th of that year. Shortly thereafter he was killed while stationed with his regiment at the Marshall House hotel, Alexandria, Virginia, becoming the first casualty of the Civil War.

Date based on similar Brady studio photographs of Ellsworth with estimated dates of 1861.
