Robin Barn, 1616 Highway 31, Arnaudville, St. Martin Parish, LA

description

Summary

2002 Charles E. Peterson Prize, Entry

Significance: The barn consists of two almost equal sized cribs built at different times. They are separated by a breezeway as in the form of a "dog-trot," that is, two structures covered by one roof with a breezeway separating the two. The crib to the north is significant in the area of architecture because it is a rare example of a French Creole "piece sur piece" construction and is finished in a way that shows its earlier use as a cabin. This type of refined log cabin construction was in use from the early eighteenth to the mid nineteenth century. The crib to the south is of "poteaux -sur-solle" or post on sill or "colombage" construction with no infill. This structure shows circular saw marks, which dates it to 1840 at the earliest.

Unprocessed Field note material exists for this structure: N802

Survey number: HABS LA-1306

Building/structure dates: after 1840 Initial Construction
