Class in American Physical Culture. A group of Albanian youngsters being instructed in calisthenics on the American Red Cross playground at Elbasan, Albania, by Miss Minnie S. Darst of Boston (center). The Red Cross took 500 children this town under its wing, teaching them how to play, develop physically, and several useful industrial trades. It was the first interest any grown up had ever taken in their welfare and the playground had a full attendance from 9 in the morning until 6 at night

All dressed up--and some place to go. A group of little Albanian girl, who have put on their Sunday best, to make a call on the American Red Cross nurses at Scutari. They are wearing clothes made by their mothers, who are learning to sew in the Red Cross workrooms. Proteges of American children. A group of Roumanian children that are receiving aid from the boys and girls of America through their Junior Red Cross organization. They were rescued from the famine by the milk and cocoa sent by the Junior Red Cross and now are enabled to go to school because of the books and supplies sent them from America. The picture was taken outside a Red Cross relief station during a demonstration in which the mothers and the children sent their thanks to the American children for the aid given them

American Aid Keeps School Open. The school at Tuzi, Montenegro that was about to be closed because of the destitute condition of the children was kept open by the timely arrival of American Red Cross supplies. Now an American flag is a permanent fixture in the school house. These children were so ragged and naked that many of them could not attend. The Red Cross sent enough clothing to outfit each child and gave aid to the children's families

A home made Ferris Wheel. Erected on the American Red Cross playground at Elbasan. The picture shows American Nurses who took a trip to prove its safety to the children. The children in Albania never knew how to play or work either until the Red Cross came. Here at Elbasan 500 youngsters are playing American games and learning useful trades under Red Cross direction. The nurses are Miss Sara W. Crossley of Cape Charles Virginia and Miss Eleano Wilson of New York City

School of refugee children which was established by the AMERICAN RED CROSS at Lourdes. This school is taught by the Sister shown in the picture. These little children are unlike most children is school. When they were told that the Fourth of July was to be a holiday and that the school would be closed they all wept so bitterly that it was decided that the school would be kept open on holidays

An American Red Cross worker teaching games to the children in the Garden of the Convent du Sacre Coeur, near Paris. Before the war the Sisters of the convent cared for 30 girls from poor families of the neighborhood teaching them housework, etc. to enable them to earn a living. When war came the sisters fooered half their convent for a 50 bed hospital for soldiers, taking the children into their own inadequate quarters to make room, and nursing the soldiers themselves. They were unable to raise enough money to continue the work until they appealed to the American Red Cross which now contribute the supplies needed, clothing, sheets, blankets, etc

Learning to Keep House. These Belgian children have no homes in which to learn housekeeping but they are learning domestic art in their dormitory of the Ypres school colony, which has been established with aid sent by the Amer. Red Cross members. The dormitory is as spotlessly clean as though the little housekeepers had lived among all the comforts which American children know. They are some of the 350 children who were gathered in the colony by the Red Cross because they have no homes in which to stay during the bitter winter. While their parents are living in damp cellars and dugouts, the children are kept as comfortable as possible

The English Class Convenes. In an outdoor classroom called on the American Red Cross playground at Elbasan, Albania, Miss Marion Echternach of Strasburg, Pennsylvania, taught English to this group of children. These children were so interested in all the Red Cross was doing for them that there was not one breach of discipline in the class. They had never gone to school before and the schoolboy pranks so well known in America were never thought of by them
