Significance: The structures, known locally as "The Limestones," are the oldest extant commercial buildings in downtown Rockford...Although the are technically two separate structures, they have long been viewed in Rockford as a single entity and are therefore treated as such here. The Limestones are especially significant because Rockford's first bank and first library were housed there. The bank provided the financial leadership that, among other things, obtained the railroad linking Rockford with Chicago and built the Water Power District that was a key element in Rockford's becoming a leading manufacturing center...
