This Canteen is situated in what was a school house. At the Annex Hospital at Chateauroux (Base Hospital No. 9) the American Red Cross nurse in charge, Mrs. R. Lee Cromwell, from the New York Hospital, talking to Andrew Danbrowny from Pottsville, Pennsylvania who has been in France 15 months, 12 months in the trenches. He has been in 9 drives, including Soissons, St. Mihiel, Cantigny and Verdun. Was badly gassed and blind for 5 days. Oct. 1918

Only hospital within sixty miles. The American Red Cross institution at Nicsic, Montenegro, for the care of sick and wounded. When the Red Cross Unit arrived here a few months before, there was no roof on the building and half a dozen families were living in the cellar. They reconstructed and cleaned the place, fed the needy of the district and set out to cure the sick. When this picture was taken, Lieut. Col. Robert E. Olds, of St. Paul Minn. Village women from Dartford, near London, visit American soldiers in new hospital just opened by American army there. Few of the visitors come empty-handed. They bring little gifts of all kinds for the soldiers, and the Red Cross usually commandeer their services, also for the distribution of comfort bags and other Red Cross material to distant parts of the grounds. All these things are carried about in "hospital wagons", which are sometimes pilled by the young women visitors, and sometimes by the convalescent Americans
