U.S.S. HORNET, Puget Sound Naval Shipyard, Sinclair Inlet, Bremerton, Kitsap County, WA
Summary
Significance: Subsequent to the unsuccessful efforts of the U.S.S. HORNET Historical Museum Association to obtain the ship as a donation, Hornet was designated a National Historic Landmark in December 1991 on the basis of her participation in the Pacific Theater during World War II, and for her participation in the recovery of the Apollo 11 and 12 command modules in 1969. Hornet was one of 24 Essex Class aircraft carriers (CVs, CVLs, and CVEs) to serve in the Pacific Theater (December 1941 to June 1945). Although a late entry to the war, aircraft launched from Hornet conducted strikes against the Japanese fleet and shore facilities between March 1944 and May 1945. Hornet was also one of several Naval vessels to recover manned space capsules from Pacific Ocean splashdowns in the 1960s.
