description

Summary

Significance: 16, 18, 20, and 22 South Sixth Street compose a rare (for Fort Dodge) surviving business block retaining a set of first-floor, Queen-Anne-Revival-style, cast-iron store fronts. No. 16, which predates the other three segments, retains its original Italianate detailing on its north (side) and west (rear) elevations with early Romanesque Revival round-arched windows having cast iron hoods and sills. The upper floors of Nos. 20 and 22 retain their original floor plans and interiors. Because of the above factors, the State Historic Preservation Office of Iowa has determined this commercial block as eligible for the National Register of Historic Places.
