Summary

Significance: The Armorer's Dwelling House was constructed sometime after 1821, on land belonging to the U.S. Armory at Harpers Ferry. Due to housing shortage in Harpers Ferry, the Armory allowed employees to erect dwellings on public land. In 1832 the U.S. Government began buying these houses and renting them to Armory workers. As part of this program, William Smallwood, listed as a common armory worker in the 1820 census, was compensated by 1837 for a stone structure 16'x19', which may have been the south half of the present structure...
